NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

PERFORMERS OF THE EVENT

**Westcliff University: Westcliff University claimed their first ever State title. The university has only been competing for two seasons. The victory came on the strength of team member Jordy Collins taking the College Mens State title and also both womens team members Silke Martinez and Sofia Freyre making the College Womens final.  

**San Clemente High School: SC swept both categories in Varsity and Junior Varsity

The Varsity team have won six straight State titles and the Junior Varsity won their eighth consecutive State title. The Varsity team clinched one individual State titles with Ben Brantell taking his first State title in Varsity Mens which was his first NSSA championship victory. San Clemente’s JV team swept the three individual championships with the JV Mens State title going to Kai Finn, the JV Womens State title going to Ezra McPhillips and the JV Longboard title going to Zeke Rose. In total, the San Clemente Varsity team has won 19 State titles, a NSSA interscholastic record while the Junior Varsity has claimed a total of 11 State titles.

 **Oak Crest Middle School: Oak Crest claimed their second straight State Championship title beating 17-time State Champions Shorecliffs. The victory came on the strength of two team members Oliver Rowe and Jett Maughan who made the Middle School Boys final. In addition, OC team members Victoria Duprat claimed her first State title in Middle School Girls with team member Shea Sherman placing 4th.

**Oak Crest Middle School Boys team member Jett Maughan posted the highest heat totals and single wave score of the entire State Championship event. Jett dropped a perfect 10 along with a 9.0 second wave score for a 19-point out of 20 heat total in the Middle School Boys round one.
