NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

SEASIDE REEF, CARDIFF BY THE SEA

CONDITIONS: Mother Nature delivered a smorgasbord of conditions at Seaside Reef. Day one on College Day was solid 4-6 foot surf off the reef with wet, rainy and glassy conditions. Day two on High School Day saw blustery victory at sea pumping, overhead surf. Day three on Middle School and Finals Day, the top student surfers on the west coast competed for State Titles in another round of solid head high to overhead surf. Some of the best performances ever witnessed at the State Champs!

PERFORMERS OF THE EVENT

**Point Loma Nazarene University: The 2022 West Coast Collegiate Conference Champions claimed their sixth State Title. PLNU placed 3 of 6 finalists in the College Mens final – State Champion Cole Frye, Jackson Butler and Brock McTigue. Team members Kennedy Hurley placed third in the College Womens and Jacob Baer took fifth in the Longboard final.

**San Clemente High School: SC swept both categories in Varsity and Junior Varsity

The Varsity team have won five straight State titles and the Junior Varsity won their seventh consecutive State title. The Junior Varsity team claimed two individual State titles with Bryce Celaya winning JV Mens and Audrey Denos taking the JV Womens. In total, the San Clemente Varsity team has won 18 State titles, a NSSA interscholastic record while the Junior Varsity has claimed a total of 10 State titles.

**Oak Crest Middle School: Oak Crest claimed their first ever State Championship title beating 17-time State Champions Shorecliffs by a score of 109-105. The victory came on the strength of three team members Sutton Tudor, Dane Libby and Jett Maughan who made the Middle School Boys final. In addition, OC team members Sawyer Southern took the Longboard State title and Victoria Duprat placed second in Middle School Girls. Oak Crest snapped a 15-year Shorecliffs winning streak!
