NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

Loaded with an abundance of natural talent, the 12-year-old continues to turns heads with his polished style and progression as he rises up the ladder of competitive success. At the Newport Open, he collected his 5th win of the season in the Boys and an impressive 2nd place in the Juniors final. He has secured a huge lead in the Open Boys ratings and is ranked 2nd in the Juniors. Besides all of his outstanding achievements the coolest thing about Jett is his stoke and positive energy. Claim to Fame: National Champion Brodi Sale loves to compete, especially when it is firing at home. So when NSSA Hawaii put on a doubleheader Open & Explorer marathon weekend at Banyans, the local Big Island boy put his best foot forward making 8 finals. In event 6, he took three 1st places in Open Boys, Explorer Boys, Explorer Menehuene and 2nd in Open Juniors. The next day, he kicked it into high gear again ripping to three 1st places in Open Juniors, Open Boys, Explorer Boys and 3rd in Menehuene! Fave thing about Banyans: When it’s pumping it’s a high performance wave. It’s always good to compete on home turf when the waves are big and fun. Fave surfer: John John. Claim to Fame: A clean swell delivered head high Salt Creek perfection for the Southwest Open event 4 and it was game on for Kade as he went on a tear taking double wins in the Mens and Juniors divisions. His win in the Juniors was his second straight but it was his triumph in the Mens final that goes down as his biggest accomplishment so far this season. Sitting in second place until the final moments of the 25-minute final to reigning Conference and Regional Champion Kei Kobayashi, Kade backed up his earlier excellent score of an 8.5 with a 7.57 on the buzzer which was enough to seal the win. With moves and power beyond his years, it’s hard to believe this talented kid is still only 13! Fave thing about Salt Creek: The long lefts. Local spot: Lowers. Fave surfer: Kolohe Andino. Claim to Fame: Taj has surfed a golden 2015/16 NSSA season so far. This past weekend, he sealed back-to-back Menehuene victories at the Carlsbad Explorer doubleheader in pumping 3-5 foot surf at Tamarack beach. He is currently 5 for 6 in the win column and holds down a hefty lead in the Menehuene rankings. The win was special for Taj as his dad Marc, a former NSSA ripper, has a special fondness for the break. Over 2 decades ago, Marc pulled off a revenge victory over Taylor Knox at a Tamarack event after Taylor edged him for the 1998 National Open Mens title by fractions of a point. This season he is focusing on the Gold Coast and Northwest events and has been racking up impressive results. At the Northwest opener in Santa Cruz, Gavin was ripping the fun right-handers of Pleasure Point. He took the win in the Open Boys final on Saturday and then backed it up on Sunday with a runner up in the Explorer Menehuenes. He also stepped it up with an outstanding finals showing in the upper bracket Explorer Boys. In Gold Coast competition, he is ranked 2nd in the Menehuenes. He also surfs up in the Menehuene division and has made 3 of 4 finals. In the Southwest Opens, he has made both Mini Grom finals and is ranked 3rd. He is also fearless in the big stuff! At the 2015 West Coast Champs in pumping 6-8 foot surf at HB Pier, “Haydo” was charging taking off on the bombs and sealing his first Regional Title in the Super Groms. His surfing has matured as noted by his impressive results in the Men’s bracket including taking out his older brother Jake in the semis. Plus he is one of the most innovative surfers in the lineup. Claim to Fame: Nothing set the tone better than to score pumping waves for the first Southwest Open of the new season and Cole came out with guns blazing. With high octane surfing displaying power, crisp snaps and progressive moves, it was lights out ripping all weekend from the 14-year-old. In waves in the 6-10 foot range with macking sets at Huntington Beach Pier and conditions varying from perfection to massive gnarly windswept walls, Cole crushed heat after heat and then put on a show in the Juniors final posting the highest wave score (9.7) and highest combined total (18.87 out of 20). In Cole's words, "that heat was unreal!" He also took an impressive 3rd place in the Mens final. Fave thing about HB Pier: "The variety of the waves-barrels, A-frames, big close-outs, I like it all." She was on fire both days with a four division sweep in the Womens and Girls divisions. She also posted the highest wave and total score in Sunday's event 2 with an excellent 9-point ride and earning a 16.5 total out of 20 in the final. Utilizing his strengths in the smallish 1-3 foot conditions, his progressive game was on point as he found the waves with ramp opporutnities and went to air with clean tail-high rotations. He went on to win the event and enter into the history books as one of the only surfers to accomplish this spectacular feat! Fave thing about Crystal Pier: the little left runners off the pier. Adding to his merits, he is ranked 3rd in the premier Open Juniors division. Kade’s radical and “mature surfing technique beyond his years” is a huge reason for his success. Utilizing his “trademark” potent backhand, Micky disseminated the long left walls with dynamic, vertical moves taking his first Open Mens win of the year on two excellent scores of 9.17 and 8.00! Ashley has been put on impressive performances this season dominating the Open Women’s division of the Northwest Conference, but her double perfect 10 display at last weekend’s contests at Pleasure Point and the Hook were huge. She has a stranglehold on the ratings with two events remaining and will undoubtedly have tons of momentum down the stretch leading into the NSSA championship series! In a smorgasbord of conditions ranging from 3-4 foot right point perfection to inconsistent 1-3 foot peelers, the San Clemente High School junior relied on his versatile skill, progressive moves and local knowledge, winning every heat and taking his second straight State Championship victory.
