NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS TO QUALIFY TEAMS FOR THE 2008 NATIONAL INTERSCHOLASTIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

The NSSA will kick off its 2008 Championship Series with the Interscholastic State Championships at Church, San Clemente March 7-9.  This championship determines which schools will receive an invitation to the 2008 National Interscholastic Championships at Salt Creek June 18-21.  The top 12 colleges, the top 10 high schools and the top 6 middle schools will qualify for the Nationals.  A complete State Championship schedule of events in available on the NSSA website at www.nssa.org under the menu button “heat times.”

The NSSA State Championships is one of the most exciting contests of the year and Church beach is the best arena for it.  The beach is absolutely buzzing with passion, tension and energy as the most competitive schools on the west coast battle it out for State titles.  15 colleges, 12 high schools and 10 middle schools will contend in the team showdown.  2007 National Champion San Dieguito will lead the charge in the high school category with defending State Champion San Clemente trying to claim their eighth State title in 10 years.  Number two ranked Carlsbad High School was runner up at the 2007 Nationals and are looking to make a serious title run this year.  Legendary Huntington Beach High School has the winningest National Championship record at 17 and the team appears as fired up and ready as ever.  Carpenteria and Newport Harbor have solid lineups and have a decent chance to upset one of the heavy favorites.

15 colleges are gearing up to battle for State bragging rights.  2007 National Champion San Diego State University will match up against defending State Champion Saddleback.  10-time National Champion UC Santa Barbara came off an extremely successful campaign during the 2007/08 regular season winning three of four events and handily securing the 2008 conference title.

In the Middle School Championships, Shorecliffs has been unstoppable as of late claiming back-to-back State and National titles in 2006 and 2007.  Their squad is looking as powerful as ever led by 2007 State Champion Ian Crane.  And you can’t overlook former National Champions Sowers and Dwyer who are always in the mix and have a shot at #1.

The NSSA Interscholastic State Championships is the first of seven events in the 2008 NSSA Championship Series.  The 2008 Championship Series events include the Interscholastic State Championships at Church, the Hawaii Championships at Kewalo Basin, HI March 15-20; the East Coast Championships at Sebastian Inlet, FL March 27-30; the NSSA Jr. Championships at Huntington Beach Pier, CA April 5; the West Coast Championships at Huntington Beach Pier, CA May 14-18; the NSSA National Championships at Salt Creek and Lower Trestles, CA June 18-28; the Northeast High School Championships at Ocean City, NJ October 19.
