NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

College Team Season Event #3

Ventura Harbor

December 11-12, 2010

CONDITIONS:  Semi walled with fun 3-5 ft waves on Saturday and a little smaller but cleaner waves on Sunday

(Huntington Beach, Ca –December 16, 2010) – The Southwest Conference College Team Season continued with event #3 at the jetties at Ventura Harbor.  Saturday the competitors were met with fun 3-5 foot semi-walled waves with some hollow sections.  Sunday the surf dropped a little but was cleaner and super rippable.

 

The third event of the College Team season started off with fun punchy waves and there was plenty of ripping going on!  In the final tally of the team competition Mira Costa took a 1 point lead (132-131)over last events winners UCSB!  It was a super close race but in the end UCSB was unable to place any of the male surfers in the final which proved to be the difference.

 

Point Loma’s Hunter Lysaught was surfing strong all weekend and was able to continue his charge throughout the event to take the win in the College Mens final.  Mira Costa’s Derrick Disney was posting some high scores and took second.  Rounding out the final was San Diego State’s Doug van Mierlo in third, Peter Kuriyama from UCSB in fourth, Shaun Burns from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in fifth and SDSU’s Kevin Whatley in sixth.   Mira Costa’s Brent Reilly deserves a mention for posting the highest heat totals of the event but fell in the repercharge.

 

In the College Womens competition, USC’s Kaleigh Gilchrist took a close but unanimous decision in the final over UCSD’s Chelsea Rauhut.  Gilchrist is no stranger to the finals as she was a stand out in the NSSA regular season and was crowned the 2009 High School Womens National Champion.  Placing third was current points leader Lipoa Kahaleuahi from UCSB followed by Heather Jordan from Mira Costa in fourth.  Taking fifth was Allie Brown from SDSU and in sixth was Kaitlin Maguire from CSUSM.

In the College Longboard final, Troy Mothershead from Point Loma took the win and scored an impressive 10 point ride on one of his waves in the quarterfinals.  Troy was on fire all event and was not to be stopped in the final.  Placing second was UCSB’s Kevin Osborne who was posting high scores throughout the event as well.  Rounding out the final was CSULB’s Blaine Lewis in third, UCSB’s Kai Medeiros in fourth, CSUSM’S Mick Rodgers in fifth and Eric Allen from Point Loma in sixth.

 

 

The NSSA Southwest Conference is proud to have support from Nike 6.0, Huntington Surf and Sport, Java Point, Surfing Magazine, Sex Wax, Channel Islands and Sugar Shack. The NSSA is a member of Surfing America, the ISA-recognized National Governing Body for Surfing in the United States.  

 

 

COMING UP IN CALI: The Southwest Conference Open Season event #7 heads south to north county’s Seaside Reef on December 18-19.  After that the NSSA will be on Christmas break and would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The College Team Season will conclude the regular season on Monday, January 17 (MLK Day) at D St in Encinitas.
