NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

GIORGIO GOMEZ WAS ON FIRE AT PONCE DEL LEON!

November 21st was a day of marathon heats for the NSSA Southeast Conference contest. Surfers showed up to fun 3-4 foot glassy surf that lasted until approximately mid day when a big wind squall came through and changed the tone of the conditions. After the storm past, competitors were blessed with good conditions for the remainder of the day.

Marathon heats were surfed by three standout competitors, Giorgio Gomez, Luke Marks and Stevie Pittman. Overall it was Giorgio with the heaviest totals and bringing in the highest win ratio for the “Iron Man”. Official stats for the Iron Man results for the top three surfers are as follows: Giorgio Gomez surfed 12 heats, made seven Finals and won 5 divisions - 71.4% win ratio; Luke Marks surfed 12 heats, made 6 finals, won 4 - 66.6% win ratio; and Stevie Pittman surfed 8 heats made 8 finals and won 5 divisions - 62.5% win ratio

*If you include High School heats: Giorgio Gomez surfed 15 heats, made 8 Finals and won 5 divisions - 62.5% win ratio.

In the midst of all the excitement surrounding the iron man competitors, Nolan Tyler was quietly doing his own thing and came up BIG with the Open Men’s win for event #3, a second place finish for Explorer Juniors in both event #3 and # 4 and a fifth place finish in Open Men’s in event #4.  Nolan has been secretly planning his attack and it appears he is making his move on the scene. This is a kid our regular suspects need to keep their eyes on.

Not to be outdone by her older brother Giorgio, Izzy Gomez continues to rule the Open and Explorer Girls divisions placing first in Open and Explorer Girls for event #3, and second in the Open Girls in event #4. Izzy has maintained first place finishes in both divisions all season long and has set the bar for what her challengers need to come up with to win. Hearing that call loud and clear, we have a new name to add at the top of the leader board. Avery Aydelotte has made herself known by stepping into the mix and taking her first NSSA victory in the Explorer Girls in event #4 with a fine follow up second place finish to Izzy in Open Girls.

The Southeast High School Event #1 pitted Melbourne High, Satellite High and Jupiter High against one another yet again! This time it was Melbourne High who came out on top narrowly shutting down an aggressive Jupiter team. Key performers were Giorgio Gomez and Parker Greenwood from Jupiter High taking the top two spots to seal the deal for a first place finish.  First time competitor Sebastian Carver from Satellite High made his inaugural visit to the High School Men’s final taking fifth place. The High School event witnessed an exciting and outstanding effort from all the   Teams.

The next event on the 2010-11 Southeast Conference schedule is our Christmas event #5 along with High School event #2 scheduled for December 11-12 at Ponce de Leon Landing.
