NSSA HAWAII REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS PRESENTED BY RVCA

MARCH 21-23, 2009

KEANU ASING TOOK COMMAND IN THE OPEN DIVISIONS.

The 2009 NSSA Hawaii Regional Championships kicked off on Saturday March 21 and ran through Monday, March 23 at Kewalo Basin.  Hawaii’s top and up-and-coming surfers were on hand to battle for prestigious Regional titles and also to earn valuable 6-star ratings points towards qualification to the 2009 NSSA National Championships.  Kewalos delivered three days of consistent good surf and great weather and the competitors took full advantage of the contestable conditions.  Day one kicked off with the elite Open Mens competition.  After plenty of heavy heats and tough competition, four of our most amazing surfers Keanu Asing, Kolohe Andino, Alex Smith and Lahiki Minamishin were left standing!  But it was Keanu Asing who was in sensational form and came out on top to take the premier Open Men’s title and also nail the victory in Open Juniors.  Keanu delivered a phenomenal performance in both finals posting perfect 10’s.  Kolohe Andino made four finals taking the win in Explorer Boys while coming in a close second in Open Mens.  Kolohe also made finals Open Juniors and Explorer Juniors.

ALESSA QUIZON SEWED UP HER SECOND STRAIGHT OPEN WOMENS REGIONAL TITLE.

In the Women’s categories, Alessa Quizon showed off her outstanding potential with solid maneuvers to clinch victories in both the Open Women’s and Explorer Girls.  This was Alessa’s second consecutive Regional title in the Open Women’s.  Two-time National Champion Leila Hurst ripped the Explorer Women’s final and looks to have an excellent shot at defending her Explorer Women’s title at the Nationals!  It came as no surprise that Maui local Ian Gentil surfed his way into four finals claiming the Regional title in Open Boys.  He also stepped up his game in the upper Explorer Boys age category with an impressive runner-up placing.  Ian also placed 5th in the Open Juniors and 5th in the Explorer Menehuene finals!  When the Open Mini Groms paddled out they immediately went to work pulling off moves to impress the judges! Dylan Lehmann posted 9’s in the final taking his first Regional Championship crown.  Kaulana Apo battled hard with Dylan and came in a close second.

2-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPION LEILA HURST TAKES THE EXPLORER.

After all of the fantastic surfing came to a close, the contest was followed up with a great championship banquet at The Hard Rock!  NSSA Hawaii would like to express its thanks to all of the individuals who came out to support NSSA Hawaii surfers and present special awards.  1999 National Open Men’s Champion Fred Patacchia, Rory Parker, Rico Jimenez were on hand to present their awards.  There were also lots of our former surfers who provided special awards such as Dustin Barca, Danny Fuller, Mikey Bruneau, Makuakai Rothman and Flynn Novak who could not attend but conveyed meaningful messages to all of our Hawaii surfers.

NATIONAL CHAMPION FREDDY P GIVING BACK!
