NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

LOCAL BOY PATRICK CAHILL WAS STOKED ON HIS PERFECT 10 AND HIS FIRST NSSA WIN.

SOUTHWEST EXPLORER #6

The NSSA and Seaside have the positive vibrations, well at least when it comes to the surf.  We always score good waves.  A pumping northwest swell delivered solid overhead plus bombs.  Both the lefts and rights were working.  On Saturday, Seaside shredders  Eric Snortum and Brent Reilly were the standouts killing it on the reef and knocking up some impressive 18.0 heat totals.  Sunday morning, the dreaded fog monster (a contest organizer's worst enemy) rolled in delaying the contest for nearly two hours.  The dawn til dark double area schedule made it impossible to finish the event.  We managed to get one final in, the Juniors final and local Encinitas surfer Patrick Cahill rose to the occasion.  In his first ever NSSA finals appearance (heck, Patrick told me he has never made it past the quarterfinals) with a healthy pack of friends and family cheering on the beach, Patrick stepped up to the plate and slugged a homerun.  Yep, he nailed his first NSSA perfect 10.  Patrick knows the place and he found one of those prime Seaside lefts that run steep all the way through.  His first move was a giant, a huge bottom turn to lip smash.  He followed it up with another power carve off the top, a massive air drop floater and then topped it off with a slashing picture perfect tailslide.  10, 10, 10 dropped in on the scorecards from the 3 judges.  Patrick may have stolen the show with the 10, but Quinn McCrystal who has been on a fire lately, blew up a solid 8.0 score with a 4.5 back up to lock down second place.

EXPLORER #6 MAKE-UP:  Explorer #6 make-up for the remaining 9 divisions will be held during Explorer #7 on January 28-29 at San Fernando St. in Mission Beach.  Check the NSSA website the Thursday prior to the contest for a complete schedule of events.
