NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

OPEN AND EXPLORER EVENT #1

CONDITIONS: The Gold Coast Conference opened up the 2016/17 season with solid 3-4 foot choppy surf and beautiful weather!

Contest #1 for the 2016/2017 Southeast/North Conference season was held on Saturday, August 27 at New Smyrna Beach Inlet.  The event was held in 3-4 foot choppy surf with beautiful weather. It was great conditions to kick off the season! We saw several double winners for the day with Diego Gutierrez making the trek from Puerto Rico to take the win in the Explorer Boys and Open Juniors. In the Super Girls and Explorer Girls it was Zoe Benedetto taking double wins.  Ryan Huckabee was one of the standouts of the day claiming both the Open Boys and Explorer Menehune wins. Triple winner honors go out to Jason Motes who dominated the Masters,  Seniors and Explorer Longboard.  Nicole Fulford was surfing strong taking double wins in the Open and Explorer Womens. The Open Mini Grom victory went to Braeden Kopec while the Super Grom division saw newcomer Corbin Buckley take the win. Super Girl winner was Ava McGowan and National Middle School Girls Champion Eden Lange continued her winning ways taking the Open Girls. Logan Hofstetter kicked the new season off strong with a win in the premier Open Mens division. Newcomer Dustin Hatton took out the Explorer Juniors while Jake Hembree took first in the Explorer Mens. Frank Gilday Sr. won the Super Seniors.

It was a great event and we are looking forward to contest #2 on contest September 17 back at NSB Inlet.
