The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

CONDITIONS: Chest to shoulder high long running, steep lefts and short rights under hot summer temps in the 90’s, calm to light winds and clear skies.

 

(Huntington Beach, Ca – September 22, 2015) – the Southwest Conference Open Season launched the second event of the 2015-16 season September 21-22 at the Oceanside South Jetty. Solid fun surf conditions were on offer for the two full days of competition on the second stop of the elite Open Season series. The west coast’s talented student surfers pushed performance and progression levels through the roof including San Diego’s Ryland Rubens who posted a perfect 10 wave score by pulling off a kerrupt flip in his opening round Open Men’s heat. This was the first kerrupt flip witnessed at west coast NSSA Open Season competition. Also a big shout out to Encinitas’ Nick Marshall who made it to double finals in the Open Juniors and Open Men’s divisions for the second consecutive event and San Clemente’s Jett Schilling for taking double victories in the Open Boys and Open Juniors. This was Jett’s second straight win in the Open Boys. Another dominant division leader was La Jolla’s Tiare Thompson who nailed her second straight triumph in the premier Open Womens division with a commanding performance in the final earning two excellent scores of 8.83 and 8.17.

 

The Southwest Conference Open Season is regarded as the leading competition for west coast surfers. Divisions are offered in Men’s, Juniors, Boys, Mini Groms, Womens and Girls.  This event was the second of 10 events in the Southwest Conference Open Season series. The NSSA Open Season is open to student surfers only.

PERFORMERS OF THE EVENT

Ryland Rubens: San Diego’s talented 16-year-old competing in his first event of the season came with guns blazing. He brought the crowd to their feet when he opened up his first round Open Men’s heat pulling off a kerrupt flip-the first one ever witnessed in NSSA west coast competition. The judges rewarded Ryland with a well-deserved perfect 10. He kept the momentum going heat after heat taking it all the way to the top of the podium for his first win of the season.

 

Nick Marshall: It’s been “game on” for this 14-year-old from Encinitas. For the second consecutive Open, Nick’s been kicking his performance level into high gear with big turns and eye-grabbing progressive moves making both the Juniors and premier Mens finals.  

 

Jett Schilling: Jett’s surfing at Oceanside was off the charts in both the Boys and upper level Juniors categories. The 12-year-old dynamo from San Clemente is surfing well beyond his years and at an incredible level with razor sharp surfing. He clinched his second straight win in the Open Boys and earned an even more impressive win in the Juniors.

 

Tiare Thompson: this 14-year-old from La Jolla continued to bring on the heat in the Open Womens division with strong rail-driven maneuvers and vertical turns posting the highest combined score (17.00 out of 20) of all the Open finals and sealing her second straight win.
