The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

College, High School and Middle School surfers head to Church for the 2015 NSSA State Championships!

2015 NSSA Interscholastic State Championships

46 teams in College, High School and Middle School divisions contend for State titles!

(Huntington Beach, Ca – March 4, 2015) – March Madness will stretch beyond the basketball court when the Interscholastic State Championships kicks off the most intense and exciting four-month period in U.S. surfing. The State Championships is the first of seven events on the 2015 NSSA Championship schedule. The 3-day tournament featuring the west coast’s top College, High School and Middle School teams will be held at the rippable righthand point of Church Beach, San Onofre March 6th through the 8th.

The NSSA’s version of March Madness is sure to be packed with hype, talented athletes and passionate team rivalries as the battle for State titles guarantees excitement and team spirit. Adding to the fervor, the competitors will be performing in the well shaped waves of Church Beach with a fun, contestable surf in the forecast for all three days of competition. The championships will commence on March 6th with the College Championships. Saturday, March 7th will begin with the High School Varsity, the Junior Varsity Championships and continue with the remainder of the College preliminary rounds. The third and final day of the State Championships on March 8th will feature the Middle School Championships and cap off with the College, High School Varsity, High School Junior Varsity and Middle School State Championship finals. The competition will also include individual divisions which will determine State Champion titles in College Mens, Womens and Longboard, High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Mens, Womens and Longboard and Middle School Boys, Girls and Longboard. The 2015 Interscholastic State Championships serves as the Regional qualifier for College, High School and Middle School teams to earn a bid to the 2015 National Interscholastic Championships June 13-15 at Salt Creek in Dana Point, California.

The reigning 2015 State Champions, San Diego State, San Clemente High School Varsity and Shorecliffs Middle School have dominated the top of the podium for six consecutive years. In the High School Junior Varsity Championships, Ventura High claimed their first State title and them went on to win their first National title at the 2015 National Interscholastic Championships. Number one ranked Point Loma (PLNU) came off an impressive and dominant 2014-15 regular season taking three victories in the four event College series. Brimming with confidence, PLNU will go into the State Championships as the number one college seed and will be aiming for their first championship title since winning the Nationals in 1999! Other number one seeds include San Clemente for the Varsity High School Championships, Ventura for the Junior Varsity High School Championships and the perennial National Champion Shorecliffs for the Middle School Championships.

2014 State Champions returning to defend their titles are PLNU’s Jack Boyes in the College Mens, SDSU’s Sam Zaiser in College Longboard, San Clemente’s Conner Dand in High School Varsity Mens and Mira Costa’s Sara Kohrogi in High School Varsity Womens. 2014 Junior Varsity Womens State Champion Annie Abicca moved up to San Dieguito’s Varsity squad as did Edison’s Christian Willerth who claimed the Junior Varsity Longboard State title last year.

Team line ups for College surfing by ranking order are as follows: PLNU “A”, Saddleback, San Diego State, Mira Costa, Cal Poly SLO “A”, UC San Diego “A”, Santa Barbara City College, UC Santa Barbara, USD, CSU Long Beach, UC Santa Cruz, Cal State San Marcos “A”, CSU Channel Islands, Cal Poly SLO “B”, PLNU “B”, USC, Cal State San Marcos “B”, UC San Diego “B”.

Team line ups for High School Varsity surfing by ranking order are as follows: San Clemente, Huntington Beach, Carlsbad, Dana Hills, Edison, San Dieguito, Mira Costa, Newport Harbor and Marina.

The Junior Varsity team ranking order is as follows: Ventura, Newport Harbor, Huntington Beach, Edison, San Dieguito, Marina and San Clemente.

The Middle School Championships at both the State and National level has been dominated by Shorecliffs who are seeking their eleventh consecutive State title. Team line up for Middle School surfing are as follows: Shorecliffs “Red”, Shorecliffs “White”, Bernice Ayer, Sowers, Dwyer “A”, Dwyer “B”, Oak Crest, Thurston, Manhattan Beach and Shorecliffs “White” and Marco Forster.

The NSSA Interscholastic State Championships is the first of seven events in the 2015 NSSA Championship Series. The 2015 Championship Series events include the State Championships at Church San Onofre March 6-8, the Hawaii Regional Championships at Kewalo Basin, Oahu, HI March 16-20; the East Coast Regional Championships at New Smyrna Beach Inlet, FL April 9-12; the NSSA Jr. Championships at Huntington Beach Pier, CA April 25; the West Coast Regional Championships at Huntington Beach Pier, CA May 14-17; the NSSA National Interscholastic Championships at Salt Creek June 13-15 and Huntington Beach Pier, CA June 26-July 3.
