SOUTHEAST NORTH OPEN AND EXPLORER SEASON FINALE HITS NEW SMYRNA BEACH!

NSSA SOUTHEAST/NORTH CONFERENCE

OPEN AND EXPLORER EVENT #8

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLORIDA

MARCH 15, 2014

By: Linda Johnston
The Southeast/North last closed out the 2013/14 season on March 15th with event #8 at New Smyrna Beach Inlet. Small but contestable waves and beautiful 75 degree weather were on offer as the competitors battled it out for final points for the season.  We had several double winners of the event.  Newcomer Jake Hembree won the Explorer Menehuene and Open Boys division.  Both victories will put Jake at the top of the ratings and he will clinch the season title in both the Open Boys and Explorer Menehuene. Sophie Falzone won in the Explorer Girls and Open Girls  which sealed the season titles for her in both divisions. Another newcomer Ben Wingate took the win in both Explorer Super Grom and Open Mini Grom divisions. Braeden Kopec was runner up in both the Super Grom and Mini Groms finals which was enough to hold on to his ratings lead and claim the season title. Double winner  Kelton Beardell took his first NSSA victories the Open Juniors and Explorer Boys.  Gavin Silver triumphed in Explorer Longboard with Julian Povilatis taking second and sealing the conference title in the division. Povilatis was also name our Sportsmanship of the Year recipient for the season. Most Improved Surfer for the season and contest winner in the Explorer Juniors division went to Tino Salim. Charlie Hajak took the win in the Seniors for this contest and also claimed the conference title.

Thank you to all of the Southeast North competitors for the great 2013/14 season and I look forward to seeing everyone at East Coast Championships!
