NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

OPEN AND EXPLORER EVENT #7

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLORIDA

Southeast North event #7 was held at New Smyrna Beach Inlet on February 15, 2014.  The weather conditions were cold and windy with small but contestable waves.  Several double winners gave standout performances for the contest with Kaleb Kirshenbaum taking command with victories in the Open Mini Groms and Explorer Super Grom divisions.  Jasmine Dean pulled off two wins in the Explorer Longboard and Explorer Womens division.  Maddy Malizia doubled up with first NSSA wins in the Open Girls and Open Womens Longboard.   DJ Buchanan was on fire the entire day taking huge wins in the hotly contested Open and Explorer Juniors divisions.  Charlie Hajeck put on some red-hot surfing taking the Seniors final.  Sophie Falzone took her second win for the season in Explorer Girls while NSSA newcomer Caimen Bowman took his first career NSSA win win in the Explorer Boys.  Ryan Huckabee shredded the Open Boys for the win while Jake Hembree ripped to first in the Explorer Menehuene final.  The final event of the 2013/14 season will be held on March 15, 2014 at New Smyrna Beach Inlet.
