NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

UNF Surf Team Dominates Competition;
Takes 2nd Consecutive Win
New Smyrna Beach, FL —(November 17th, 2013) The UNF Surf Team was in fine form Sunday during their 4th National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) College Surf Contest of the 2013/2014 competitive season. They took out a highly contested field comprised of the top schools in Florida to earn top honors. These schools included UF, UCF, FIT, FAU, USF, Stetson, Flagler, and Daytona State College. Not only did the UNF A Team take 1st for their second consecutive contest, but the UNF B Team also out-performed every other school’s team, earning a 2nd Place finish only to the UNF A Team.
This marks the mid-point of the UNF Surf Team’s competitive season. They have now competed in 3 out of the 4 contests held to date in the 2013/2014 NSSA competitive season, earning a 2nd Place finish, followed by two 1st’s. Four regular season contests remain, followed by the NSSA East Coast Championships held in New Smyrna Beach, FL in April, and the NSSA National Championships held in Dana Point, CA in June. “The UNF Surf Team is looking stronger and more well-rounded then ever this year. We have a great group of student-athletes who are hungry to claim UNF’s first ever NSSA East Coast Championship Title.” said Co-Captain Max Mertens when asked about this year’s team. “And everyone believes that this goal can be accomplished if we keep up the hard work.”
The Performer of the Day was freshman Patrick Kelly who battled it out in both the Men’s Short-board Division and the Long-board Division; finishing 4th Place and 2nd Place, respectively. Other standouts were Don Wight who finished 2nd in the Men’s Short-board Division, Brandon Onesky who finished 5th in the Men’s Short-board Division, Max Mertens who finished 6th in the Men’s Short-board Division, and Adam Bartoshesky who finished 4th in the Long-board Division.
