NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

EXPLORER EVENT #1 & #2

CONDITIONS: A fun doubleheader weekend to kick off the 2012-13 Gold Coast Season. A combo of west and southeast swell delivered clean 2-3 foot point break rights for both days of competition.

(Huntington Beach, Ca – September 3, 2013) -- The 2013-14 NSSA Gold Coast Conference got underway with the doubleheader Explorer events number one and two on August 31-September 1 at C Street Pipe. Surf conditions ranged from fair to good with a combo west and southeast swell producing perfect 2-3 foot point break rights. The Gold Coast surfers cashed in on the fun well-shaped point-break rights delivering high-scoring performances. Beautiful Indian summer conditions prevailed under warm sunny skies and clean, glassy surf.

Highlights from Gold Coast Conference opening weekend:

--12-year-old Tommy McKeown took three victories with an impressive double win on opening day event #1 taking the Boys and Menehuene final. He backed it up with a victory in the event #2 Menehuene final and was the leading scorer of the weekend posting the top combined heat total (18.8) in that final. Tommy’s monster performance earned him the “SCOSCHE PERFORMER OF THE EVENT” award and “NSSA SURFER OF THE WEEK” honors.

--Santa Cruz’s Nic Hdez returned to Explorer competition posting double wins in the Men’s and Juniors divisions in event #2. Thelen Worrell took the Juniors win in event #1 and Micky Clarke claimed the Men’s win in event #1 along with a runner-up finish in event #2.  

--In Boys competition, Sean Woods went ballistic on a C Street righthander in his event #1 quarterfinal posting a 9.6 score which was the highest wave score of the of the entire weekend. He finished 4th in event #1 and then returned the following day laying it all on the line with a dominating winning performance in the Boys final.

--Cayucos legend and former PSAA professional Tony Foster returned to competition putting forth a powerful surfing display in the Seniors winning both finals.   

--After putting in many young grom years in Gold Coast competition,  10-year-old Gavin Eason finally rose to the top of the podium scoring his first NSSA win in the event #1 Super Grom final. Gavin has been competing in the NSSA since he was 6 years old! The following day, NSSA newcomer Finn Reyes claimed his first NSSA win in the event #2 Super Grom final.

--In Womens surfing, Steffi Kerson is quickly establishing herself as one of the top female surfers on the west coast. After spending the summer surfing in Nicaragua, Steffi returned to competition in strong form posting consistent scores in the excellent range while taking commanding wins in both Women’s finals. In the Girls, Malia Faramarzi claimed double wins in both events.

COMING UP IN CALI: September is chock full of NSSA competition! The Southwest Explorer Season will be up next with a doubleheader at Huntington Beach Pier September 7-8. The Gold Coast will put on another doubleheader event September 14-15 in the hollow beach break peaks of Ventura Harbor Jetty. The Southwest Conference Open Season will get underway with elite competition on September 21-22 bringing the top competitive surfers on the west coast to the high performance beach break peaks of Oceanside’s South Jetty. The following weekend September 28-29, the Open Season will continue with event #2 at the nation’s most infamous surf stadium at Huntington Beach Pier.
