SOUTHEAST NORTH EVENT #3 SCORES GOOD 3-4 FOOT WAVES AT NSB!

NSSA SOUTHEAST/NORTH CONFERENCE

OPEN AND EXPLORER EVENT #3

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLORIDA

NOVEMBER 10, 2012

By: Linda Johnston

Competitors were greeted with another beautiful day in New Smyrna Beach for the Southeast/North Conference event number 3 on Saturday, November 10. Good 3-4 foot waves were on offer with a steady northeast wind. Once again, the contest saw a great turnout of competitors including new, talented standouts from the Dominican Republic. Reigning East Coast Open Women’s Champion Austin Piper clinched her first wins of the season with double victories in Open and Explorer Womens. Shaelyn Cunningham took command of the younger female divisions with double wins in the Open and Explorer Girls.  Last year's “Most Improve Surfer” Cobie Gittner was on fire at this event walking away with both the Open and Explorer Junior victories. As noted, Dominican Republic surfers made a statement at this event. Antonio Balbuena took his first career NSSA victory in the Open Mens while fellow DR surfer Brian Coutu triumphed in Explorer Boys. Chase Elmore captured the win in the Menehuene final in a close battle over Iron Man Robbie McCormick. Robbie came storming back in the Open Boy final destroying it with the high heat totals of the day (13.5 out of 20). Nine-year-old Kaleb Kirshenbaum stepped it up for a second place in the Open Boys and then claimed his third straight win of the season in the Open Mini Groms. Noah Brownell won the Super Groms. Dylan Prestwood claimed his third win in the Longboard division and gnarly Charlie Hajek pulled out a win in the Super Seniors.

Thank you to all of the NSSA staff and competitors for another terrific event and we look forward seeing everyone back at New Smyrna Beach Inlet for Open and Explorer event #4 on December 1st. Be sure to check the hotline for exact location.

The 2012-13 NSSA East and West coast competition season competition is proudly presented by Nike.
