GRIFFIN COLAPINTO PUSHES THE PERFORMANCE ENVELOPE

(Huntington Beach, Ca – October 11, 2012) -- The 2012-13 NSSA Southwest Conference Explorer resumed with the second doubleheader weekend of the 2012-13 season on October 6-7 at Huntington Beach’s Ninth Street sandbars. Great conditions came together for the weekend’s comp with a solid combination of northwest and southwest swells in the water. The surf was super fun with scattered chest to head high wedgy peaks and light winds prevailing. The well-shaped sandbars and clean conditions offered great scoring opportunity and plenty of good air sections for the competitors to showcase their skills.

DOUBLE WINNER ANDREW NIEMANN WAS ON HIS GAME SATURDAY!

Highlights from the Explorer doubleheader weekend:

--Things were clicking for local HB surfer Andrew Niemann on Saturday as he ripped his way to double victories in the Mens and Juniors divisions posting his first victories of the 2012-13 season.

--Other first time winners for the 2012-13 Explorer Season in event #3 included Danny Kenduck in the Boys, Dagan Stagg in the Menehuenes, Rachel Tominaga in the Womens and Eric Peterson in the Kneeboard. HB local Samantha Cendro surfed impressively in familiar waters sweeping double first places in the Girls division for her first victories of the season. Longboard competitor Michael Bonds took command in his first Explorer Season appearance claiming both wins. Sara Kohrogi sealed her first Explorer win in the event #4 Women’s final.

--Despite exchanging marriage vows later in the day, Kneeboard competitor Paul Devoy was revved up and ready to go advancing to the final and placing fourth. A few hours later he did a double toast to his new wife and his finals showing!

--Sunday’s event #4 witnessed some spectacular high level surfing. Griffin Colapinto detonated in the Juniors final putting on an electrifying show, posting a perfect 10 on a massive aerial maneuver and then backing it up with a 9.2.

--Jake Marshall added another victory in the Boys division for his second win of the Explorer season. Marshall is currently leading the rankings in both the Explorer Boys and the Open Juniors where he has collected two victories in that division as well.

--In the event #4 Menehuenes, Tyler Gunter was surfing rock solid on the shifty Ninth Street sandbar peaks taking a convincing first place decision in the final. This was his second win of the season.

--Kade Matson has been making his mark in the Southwest 10 & under divisions this season. Last weekend, he came off his first big Open win at Seaside Reef. He ruled the Explorer Super Grom division again claiming double wins in events 3 & 4 and will remain undefeated thus far.

--Rick Takahashi and Eric Sorensen have been going head-to-head in Masters and Seniors competition. Sorensen took his second Masters win of the season in event #3 with Takahashi triumphing in the Seniors. The following day, Takahashi was in rhythm walking away with both the Masters and Seniors victories.

--Rick “Rockin Fig” Fignetti continues to cement his status as the man-to-beat in both the Super Seniors and Duke categories. The reigning National Champion was on fire again winning the two divisions in both events and remains undefeated amassing eight wins so far in 2012-13 regular season competition.

--Griffin Colapinto was named NSSA Surfer of the Week for his explosive performance in the Juniors division, running up the scoreboard with a superb 19.2 out of a possible 20 combined total.
