NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

THE 2011-12 SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE OPEN SEASON CHAMPIONS!

 

HIGHLIGHTS

**Taylor Clark took his fifth victory of the season with a powerful, progressive surfing performance on southside. Clark’s consistent and dominant surfing throughout the season secured him the 2011/12 Southwest Open Men’s conference crown…one of the most recognized and celebrated honors in the NSSA.

**Kulia Doherty dominates the Open Womens division winning her sixth event of the season while easily clinching the conference title.

**Griffin Colapinto put on a super impressive surfing display on southside nailing his third season victory in the Juniors and securing the conference title. Colapinto also earned his third runner up showing this season in the premier Open Mens division.

**John Mel put on a super heat in his Open Boys quarterfinal posting the highest combined total of the event (18.93) with two wave scores of 9.93 and a 9.00. Mel also claimed his fifth Open Boys victory of the season and handily secured the conference title.

**14-year-old female phenom Frankie Harrer who made a statement this season with her unmatched competitive record and accomplishments, placed runner-up in the Open Girls final but handily collects the conference title on the strength of her 8 season victories in the division. Harrer crushed the all-time season wins record posting 40 victories in the 2011-12 season.

**Tia Blanco broke the ice in the Open Girls collecting her first win of the season in the division in a hard fought final.

**Noah Hill claimed his second Open Mini Grom victory of the season. Nick Marshall who sat out the final event of the season, earned the conference title on the strength of five season victories.

**Tony Bartovich tore up his local break on southside scoring his fifth season win in the Longboard division and nailing his first NSSA conference title.

 

The NSSA Southwest Conference is proud to have support from Nike, Huntington Surf and Sport, Java Point, Surfing Magazine, Sex Wax, Channel Islands, Vitaminwater, Sugar Shack and Laguna College of Art + Design.
