NSSA COLLEGE TEAM SEASON KICKED OFF AT BLACKS BEACH

NSSA SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE

COLLEGE TEAM SEASON EVENT #1

BLACKS BEACH, SAN DIEGO

OCTOBER 22-23, 2011

CONDITIONS: 2-3 feet, clean and glassy rights and lefts

By Gayline Clifford

(Huntington Beach, Ca – October 24, 2011) – Twenty three of the West Coast’s College Teams descended the cliff at Blacks Beach for the first stop of the Southwest Conference College Team Season.   It was an exciting race as San Diego State cinched UCSD by one point with a 122 – 121 win.  Not far behind was Mira Costa College with 117 points in third.

College Mens Finalists

In the College Mens division Mira Costa’s Dayton Silva took his first win of the season in the fun 2-3 foot beachbreak peaks.  With time winding down Dayton picked off a set wave and threw a huge tail slide followed by a huge lip gouge to seal the deal for the first place trophy.  Second place went to UCSD’s Shaun Burrell who threw three huge frontside snaps of his own to impress the judging panel.  Rounding out the final was Derrick Disney from Mira Costa in third, Josh Morse from SDSU in fourth, Shaw Kobayashi from Saddleback in fifth and Cody Canzoneri also from Saddleback in sixth.

College Womens Finalists

In the College Womens division, east coast transplant Keenan Lineback from USD scored a unanimous first place decision.  Midway through the heat Keenan paddled into a fun one and pulled off 2 big backside hits to take the win.  SDSU’s Marissa Shaw took second followed by UCLA’s Taylor Pitz in third, USC’s Kaleigh Gilchrist in fourth, Emmy Merrill from Point Loma in fifth and CSULB’s Erika Cook in sixth.

College Longboard Finalists

In the College Longboard final it was UCSB’s Josh Gandulla who took the unanimous win.  Josh found the longer fun lined up waves and used his old school nose riding skills, hanging 5’s and 10’s then finishing it off with a re-entry to score the victory.  Saddleback’s Dennis White scored a couple of good waves but it was not enough to keep Josh from the win.  Coming in third was SDSU’s Dan Truax followd by CSULB’s Cody Watten in fourth, UCSB’s Kai Medeiros in fifth and UCLA’s freshman Jason Schechter in sixth.

The NSSA Southwest Conference is proud to have support from Nike 6.0, Huntington Surf and Sport, Java Point, Surfing Magazine, Sex Wax, Channel Islands, Vitaminwater, Sugar Shack and the Laguna College of Art + Design.
