NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

33rd ANNUAL NSSA NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS PRESENTED BY NIKE 6.0 DRAWS THE NATION'S TOP YOUTH SURFERS TO HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA

Event Runs June 29-July 3, Nike 6.0 Webcast will be LIVE July 1-3

SAN CLEMENTE, CALIF., June 25, 2010 -The 33rd Annual National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Open Championships returns to the site of its inaugural event: the Huntington Beach Pier in Surf City U.S.A. Tuesday, June 29-Saturday, July 3. This event marks the culmination of the 2009-10 NSSA competition season drawing the country's top amateur surfers to the Southern California coast hungry to compete for a coveted National Title.

Hundreds of surfers from the NSSA's eight regional conferences in the United States will be competing over nine intense and fun-filled days with National Champions being crowned in 29 separate categories. As such, this contest provides a platform not only for NSSA's rising stars, but also for determined up-and-comers that are hungry to prove themselves in a variety of different categories.

Among the 2010 Open Men's top contenders are number one ranked, Conner Coffin (CA), 16, who is determined to back-up his 2006 Open Boys National Title with a win in 2010, number 2 ranked, Tanner Hendrickson (HI), 17, who dominated during the regular season, regional championships and hopes to carry that momentum into Nationals and Evan Geiselman, ranked third, who will attempt to bring the prized Open Men's Title home to the East Coast for the first time in NSSA Nationals history. However, local favorite, Christian Saenz (CA), 18, and Keanu Asing (HI), 16, ranked fourth and fifth respectively, are both equally determined to secure the path to victory for themselves as are the remainder of the 16 competitors in the Open Men's field.

The Juniors field is equally stacked with Jake Halstead (CA), 16, Kaoli Kahokuloa (HI), 15, and Parker Coffin (CA), 14, rounding out the top three spots respectively. Jake has been on a tear since his second place finish in the U16 Mens Final at the ISA World Games last January, but between Kaoli's gravity-defying aerials and Parker's determination to follow in his brother's footsteps, the division promises to be action packed.

Similarly, the Open Women's division is bound to be a nail-biter as well with reigning champion Lakey Peterson (CA), 15, on the prowl for a repeat performance against two-time National Champion Leila Hurst (HI), 16, 2009 finalist Nage Melamed (HI), 16, and Jasset Umbel (FL), 16, leading the charge from the East.
