NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

SAN CLEMENE, CALIF., June 21, 2010 - Nike 6.0 presents a LIVE webcast of the final three days of the 2010 National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Open Championships in Surf City U.S.A. at the Huntington Beach Pier. The event runs Tuesday, June 29 through Sunday, July 3. The webcast, along with real-time scoring, results and statistics will be streaming live July 1-3 at www.nssalive.com.

The NSSA National Open Championships represents the culmination of over 80 NSSA events nationwide and is one of the most prestigious amateur surfing events in the country. Over the course of the contests' 32 years, the NSSA is proud to claim a role in the advancement of many of surfing's most prominent athletes including former NSSA National Open Champions: Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Kalani Robb, Andy Irons, Bruce Irons, CJ Hobgood, Carissa Moore, Nat Young and 2009 Men's Open Champion, Kolohe Andino.

The organization is proud to continue in the tradition of providing a portal to the future of professional surfing. The NSSA's mission is to help develop aspiring surfers' skills through participation in high quality surfing events that will prepare them to take their surfing career to the next level. However, the NSSA is also a strong proponent of education, espousing the importance of academic excellence and requiring competitors to meet certain academic standards in order to qualify for competition.

"Watching the top contenders battle for the titles at the NSSA National Championships is a direct look into the future of surfing," says Zach Boon, Nike 6.0 North American Brand Manager. "Nike 6.0's goal in supporting the NSSA and the Live Webcast is realized by the families, friends, and seers of the sport being able to peer into this crystal ball from wherever they may be across the globe. I personally can't wait to see the future written."

The three-day webcast will include coverage of all rounds of the Open Men's, Open Women's beginning with the Quarter Finals, Open Junior's beginning with Round Two, all rounds of the Open Boys as well as the Open Mini Groms and Open Longboard finals. Additionally, Sunday's coverage will include the National Explorer Championship finals, National High School Championship finals and the National Airshow Championship final.
