NSSA WEST COAST KICKS OFF THE 2007-08 COLLEGE TEAM SEASON AT BLACKS BEACH

NSSA COLLEGE TEAM SEASON EVENT #1

CONDITIONS: Super fun classic Blacks lefts with head high waves and overhead sets. Best and biggest on Sunday.

The 2007-08 NSSA College Team season finally got underway last weekend after having to postpone the season opener due to the tremendous amount of fires San Diego that were causing poor air quality. Originally the season was set to start on Oct 27-28 but had to be postponed to Nov 3-4. That did not stop the teams from coming out in full force. Twenty seven teams were on hand at Blacks Beach for the season opener. It was a little chilly and overcast but super fun classic blacks lefts.

Despite only placing one team member in the finals, UCSB A team came home with the victory. This was due largely in part by a strong showing from all team members in the earlier rounds. UCSB A team narrowly defeated a strong CSUSM A team 126.5 to 126. Hosting the event was UCSD A team who placed third followed by Saddleback A team in fourth.

In the College Mens division, UCSD’s co-captain Marty Weinstein took a decisive victory over Nate Zoller from UCSC A. Marty used his local knowledge of the beach break lefts combined with strong off the tops to make sure he would take home the first place trophy. Marty won every heat on his way to the final. Rounding out the College Mens final was Scott McBride from CSUSM A in third, Cameron Pappas from USD in forth, Brad Burdick from Saddleback A in fifth and Daniel Shea from UCSC A team in sixth.

Going into the College Womens final it was super close as Allie Brown (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii) competing for the defending National Champion SDSU A and defending College Womens National Champion Lauren Sweeney competing for UCSD A went to balttle. Both surfers took first places in all their preliminary rounds. When the smoke cleared it was Allie Brown who came out on top. This is Allie’s first season in NSSA College competition. Marissa Eveland from PL A placed third followed by Mary McCormick from UCSD B in fourth, Tina Spadafora from USD in fifth and Lipoa Kahaleuahi from UCSB A in sixth.

The action was hot and heavy in the College Longboard division with all five of the top five Longboarders from the 2006-07 Southwest Open Season Longboard division competing in college competition. Defending Southwest Conference Champion Kevin Osborne from Saddleback A team went undefeated in this event by winning every heat including the final. Defending National College Longboard champion Billy Harris from the Mira Costa Red team followed in second. Defending National Open and Explorer Longboard Champion Troy Mothershead from Point Loma A took third followed by Chris Smith from CSUSM A team in fourth, Christian Clark from CSUSM B team taking fifth and Chris Koerner from SDSU A team taking sixth.

College competition will continue with event #2 at South Mission Beach in San Diego on Dec 8-9.
