NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

WESTERNS HIGHLIGHTS

The waves were once again the star for the NSSA West Coast Championships.  In true Westerns fashion, a heavy Southwest swell packing the punch, powered its way to Huntington Beach Pier producing overhead plus surf and sweeping currents for the competitors.  Huge lefts were rifling into the pier.  Conditions were challenging but the waves were smokin' which made for some monster performances.  The swell pumped in 4-8 foot bombs for the first three days of competition before tapering off to 3 to 5 feet on finals day.  Record participation for a NSSA Regional Championship was recorded with nearly 600 contestants battling it out for West Coast titles and to improve their ranking for the upcoming National Championships this coming June at Salt Creek and Lower Trestles.

TANNER SETS HIS SIGHTS ON THE FINAL CHALLENGE-A GUDUASKAS TRIFECTA.

For Tanner Gudauskas, his final NSSA season has been on and off, primarily due to nagging health problems.  Those issues were obviously behind him as he was back to his old self and in form on the Open Season opening day annihilating his heats.  He posted the top scores of the division, a blistering 9.33 ride in the quarters and an 8.83 in Round two.  He continued his charge into the finals where he faced Kellen Ellison, Leandro Usuna, Chad Compton, Eddie Lester and Dillon Perillo.  In the deteriorating whitecapping conditions, Tanner took control from the outset notching up two solid scores of 6.17 and 7.33.   Kellen kept himself within striking distance and answered back with a solid 7.50 ride but came up short on his second wave score.  The victory thrusts Tanner into big momentum as he goes full speed ahead into Nationals as a leading contender.  No doubt he will take it to another level to complete the Gudauskas trifecta (older brothers Pat and Dane won the titles in 2003 and 2004 respectively).

ALL THE GOLD COAST BIG WAVE PRACTICE PAYS OFF-SAGE DROPPING IN ON A BOMB!

Sage Erickson has the winning formula when it comes to HB Pier.  She successfully defended West Coast Championship throne winning both the Open and Explorer Womens divisions.  Courtney Conlogue was looking strong to make a bid in the earlier rounds but Sage turned up the heat in the final cementing a huge victory margin with 7.50 and 7.00 scores.  It was payback time for Sage as she recently lost the Southwest Conference crown to Courtney at the final event of the season.

THE BIGGER THE BETTER WHEN NAT COMES TO PLAY.

Santa Cruz young gun Nat Young was right at home in the high-powered waves because he surfs that gnarly stuff all the time at home.  His momentum built throughout the four days as he attacked the raging surf.  He racked up victories heat after heat and advanced to two finals.  He couldn’t put it together in the Explorer Boys final but he energized for the Open Juniors and took the win over HB local Quinn McCrystal.

LUKE EXPLODED IN THE BOYS FINAL.

Luke Davis raised the bar early on when he drilled a spectacular perfect 10 on his second wave of the Open Boys final.  Kolohe Andino responded with a 7.33 but Luke slammed the door shut when he nailed a good 6.67 ride.

MINI GROM PARKER COFFIN STEPPED IT UP IN THE FINAL.

Parker Coffin only caught two waves but that was all he needed to take command of the Mini Grom final.  He opened up with a solid 6.17 ride and then locked in another 6.0 score to claim his first NSSA championship victory.

In the Open Longboard division, Christian Wach rose to the occasion right off the bat with a remarkably flawless 10.0 ride on his opening wave.  Troy retaliated with a strong 8.5 score but a perfect 10 is nearly impossible to beat.  Christian notched up another good 7.5 to ace his second consecutive West Coast title.
