The NSSA Gold Coast Conference headed north to Pismo Pier for event #4 on September 24.  The infamous clam capital of the west also serves up some of the most consistent surf on the Central California coast and our contest was treated to chilly chest to shoulder high surf all day.  Random wind conditions resulted in clean to choppy faces but the surf remained fun and contestable throughout the day.  Speaking of consistent, Cory Arrambide has been unbroken in the Mens division this season.  He was belting out vert off the tops, fin free gouges and landing air reverses like clockwork.  Check below for the scoop.

GOLD COAST ROUNDUP

Cory A. erupted from the starting buzzer and dominated til the sun went down.  He blitzed the Men’s final nearly combo-ing all his rivals with a pair of eight and a half point rides.  Although the Men’s final turned out to be a massacre, the Juniors final was a different story when Norcal star Austin Smith-Ford went head to head.  Austin almost got the nod over Cory with a 7.0 ride in the final minutes but the score fell short by a 0.5.  Cory nabbed his third victory in Juniors.  Add this to his four in the Mens and the airshow conquest and it gives him eight total wins on the season, the most of any NSSA competitor thus far.

Norcal surfers are coming out of the shadows this year and emerging as big talents.  Along with Smith-Ford, we have Men’s finalist Calder Deyerle, airman Kyle Buthman, female rippers Lexi Wilson and Sahara Ray and Boys shredder Nat Young.  Nat has not missed a NSSA final this year in Open or Gold Coast.  At Pismo, Nat’s straight up lip bashes and fin free slides earned him his second win of the season.  He also earned high wave of the contest honors in his Boys round one heat when he went ballistic with four big snaps on a set lefty.

Parker Coffin: Warpainted and ready for combat.

In the Menehuene division, Parker Coffin at ten years old is one of the youngest in the line-up.  Showing no signs of intimidation, the young gun continues to step up to the plate and slam home victories, this one his second of the season.  Parker squeaked out the win over brother Conner in a tiebreak decision.

Sage roasted the Womens competition again collecting her fourth consecutive victory.  TJ Pingle claimed her first NSSA win in the Girls division.  Yari Vodraska, freshly recovered from a black widow bite that sidelined him from the Port Hueneme double header, took the Masters final.  Dominic Keen shredded an eight point ride getting the job done in the Seniors division and Alex Hauck clinched his second straight win in Longboard competition.

Dominic domo-ed the Seniors division.

AIRSHOW:  It is usually cutting edge where the airshow is concerned and this time Cory A. was at the leading edge of the group.   Wave conditions were challenging at best due to increased onshores and choppy wave faces but every now and a decent race track section would form.  Cory found the launch zone on a head high lefthander pulling a forehand indy grab air reverse earning an 8.5.  For good measure he popped off another big air reverse in the Men’s final.

COMING UP IN CALI:  October is a jam packed whirlwind of contests.  The Gold Coast mid season five star rated event #5 will be held on October 1 at C Street in Ventura.  The Southwest Conference Open Season continues with event #2 at Carlsbad’s Ponto Beach on October 8-9.  Then it is off to Oceanside for Explorer #2 on October 15-16.  Open Season #3 will be held at HB Pier on October 22-23.  It is back to C Street for Gold Coast #6 on October 29 and the Southwest College Season will kick off on October 30 at C Street.
