2005 NSSA INTERSCHOLASTIC STATE CHAMPIONS!

With fifty-five teams strong competing, the NSSA held it’s 2005 Interscholastic State Championships amongst a packed crowd on Saturday and Sunday, March 12-13.  Mother nature delivered good chest to head high shreddable Church right-handers throughout the weekend.  Twenty-four colleges, twenty-three high schools and eight middle schools were contending for prestigious State titles.  Parents and spectators came out in mass numbers cheering for their favorite school teams and we even had the San Clemente marching band perform during the finals!  When all 2,880 minutes of surfing were completed, San Clemente High School, Long Beach State and Sowers Middle School were breaking open the sparkling cider and celebrating their championship triumph.

HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONS L-R: Colleen Mehlberg, Troy Mothershead, Chris Waring, Timmy Schulz

HIGH SCHOOL SCOOP:  If grades were given out at this contest, the San Clemente High School surf team would surely earn an "A” for effort.  After a stunning blow in round one losing two team members, the six time reigning National and State Champions suddenly found themselves painted in a corner behind a much improved Huntington Beach High school team and a highly energized San Dieguito squad.  All six HB team members scored first place finishes in round one and San Dieguito members were looking good collecting four first places and two thirds.  After round two heats, San Clemente was trailing the HB team by 21 points and San Dieguito by 14.  Despite losing a surfer in round two, Huntington was in the driver’s seat going into round three heats but this is where the wheels fell off for the seventeen time National Champions.  Three team members were sent to the showers while both San Clemente and San Dieguito advanced four surfers to the quarters.  San Dieguito’s darkhorse title hopes were squashed in the quarters when only one of their three advanced – and you could smell the momentum suddenly shifting back to San Clemente.  Going into the final rounds, it was still nail-biting close between HB and San Clemente.  HB’s sole surviving member Chris Waring matched up in the final with San Clemente’s Drew Ventura and Trevor Saunders, San Clemente "B” teamer Jamie Parkhurst and Ventura High School’s Cory Arrambide and Spencer Regan who were tearing it up all weekend.  Waring was just plain too solid at this event.  He was killing it heat after heat and even put up a perfect 10 and a 9.0 in Mens round 2 for the high scoring totals of the champinship event.  Chris took the final handily with a heat high 9.5 score and a backup 5.0.  With the race for the title still too close to call, the X-factor in all this would come down to the special teams.  It was gut check time for San Clemente team members Troy Mothershead and Colleen Mehlberg but they came through with flying colors for their team and retiring coach Bill Hartman taking first places in their respective Longboard and Women’s finals.  SC bodyboarder Niko Skiparnias added some vital points with a third place finish.  The sun was setting for HB after a weekend filled with beautiful possibilities and the harsh realities.  San Clemente emerged with victorious taking their seventh consecutive NSSA State title with a 140-138 victory or Huntington Beach.  PREDICTION: IT’S GOING TO BE AN INTENSE NATIONALS!

COLLEGE STATE CHAMPIONS L-R:  Dave Pinto, Tommy Ostendorf, Tim Warner, Lauren Sweeney

COLLEGE SCOOP: Talk about a photo finish.  The top three teams were separated by a scant one point with Cal State Long Beach claiming a 124-123-122 victory over the defending champion Mira Costa squad and #2 ranked Point Loma.  After going winless during the regular season this year, Long Beach team captain Justin Hugron fed off the pressure and was passionate about securing the victory and silencing the naysayers  "The Beach” snagged their first NSSA title since their Nationals heyday in 2001.  USC’s Dave Pinto and Mira Costa’s Jameson Newtson were surfing solid in the Men’s final with Pinto barely edging out Newtson for the title with a 14.5-14.0 heat score.  Mira Costa’s Lauren Sweeney claimed the Women’s victory and while remaining undefeated in College competition this year.  USD’s Tommy Ostendorf was putting on clinics in the Longboard division heat after heat.  He only caught two waves in the final but his near flawless 9.0 ride and 5.0 backup sealed the deal. Tim Warner took the State crown in the Bodyboard division for Mira Costa.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONS L-R: Blake Michael, Drew Erichson, Cassidy Wehsener, Eddie Elles

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCOOP: It’s been nearly a decade since the days of Sowers Middle School domination which led then to two back-to-back National titles in 1995-96.  That was back in the day when their team commanded with now WCT surfer Timmy Reyes and professional surfer and multi National Champion Micah Byrne.  To add more salt to the wounds was the successes cross town rival Dwyer’s has been enjoying since 1996 which included three consecutive National titles ’97, ’98, 99 and then last year’s darkhorse victory.  At this event, Sowers sent a message loud and clear – "We’re Back!”  They took an 89-82 victory over 2004 State Champ Bernice Ayer while Dwyer finished third with 80 points.  Sowers' Eddie Elles nailed his first NSSA championship title winning the Middle School Boys final in a close decision over Bernice Ayer’s David Price.  Eddie and David were neck and neck until the final moments when Eddie caught a bombing right earning a 5.0 which put him in the lead.  Cassidy Wehsener captured the Middle School Girls title for Diegueno with a high scoring 5.0 ride.  The Longboard final was hotly contested between Marco Forster’s Blake Michael and Bernice Ayer’s Scott Brandenburg.  Both kids cranked up solid performances earning high 7.0 scores.  Blake edged out Scott by a mere half point when he threw down a 6.0 on his second scoring ride which gave him the victory and his first NSSA championship title.  In the Middle School Bodyboard category, Drew Erichson of Bernice Ayer claimed the victory.

The top finishers in the High School, College and Middle School divisions will receive invitations to the 2005 NSSA National Interscholastic Championships June 16-18 at Salt Creek in Dana Point.
