A field of 28 teams strong showed up in force to compete in the third event of the Southwest Conference College season.  The competition was held at beautiful Campus Point in Santa Barbara with small but contestable waist high rights and some occasional lefts.  San Diego State had just enough to slip by Pt. Loma by a score of 143-141.  Both teams put the brakes on current No. 1 ranked and defending National Champion Mira Costa who has dominating collegiate surfing the past year.  This was a breakthrough for SDSU who hasn’t collected a regular season victory in over five years.  Pt. Loma team member Erik Fawcett pulled out all the stops in the Men’s final to take a close decision over Todd Hutton surfing for CSULB.  USC’s Dave Pinto was in the game with a high scoring 8.0 ride but didn’t have a solid backup wave.  Scores remained tight for the first half of the final, but Fawcett hit a strong rhythm in the final minutes to steal away with the lead.  Mira Costa claimed two winners in individual events.  Lauren Sweeney took her third straight in the Women’s and Chris Pompa absolutely dominated the field in Longboard with a heat total of 17.5 out of a possible 20.  Andy Gold triumphed in the Bodyboard final for SDSU.
