NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLORIDA

New Smyrna Beach Inlet played host to the fourth stop of the 2012-13 Southeast/North Open and Explorer Season on December 1st. Competitors were greeted with another beautiful day and the Inlet delivered contestable 3-4 foot choppy surf.  Yet again, the contest saw a terrific turnout of competitors. Reigning East Coast Champion Corey Howell was on his game, pulling out all the stops in a commanding triumphant performance in four divisions. Corey won the Open Mens, Explorer Mens, Explorer Juniors and also surfed for his Brevard Community College team taking the win in the College Mens. Robbie McCormick was tearing up the chunky conditions scoring an impressive three victories. He triumphed in his regular age category Open Boys and Explorer Menehuenes and then stepped it up a notch posting a huge victory in the upper age bracket Open Juniors division. Robbie also took runner up in the Explorer Boys final which was won by Chase Stevens. In the Open Mini Grom division, Southeast/North newcomer Evan Tyson was charging waves over his head taking an outstanding win. In the Super Groms, Kai Delorenzo was the winner.  Fisher Grant surfed smooth and polished in the bumpy conditions to win the Open Longboard. The girls battled the choppy, challenging surf with Emory McClary taking her first win in the Explorer Girls Division while Molly Kirk walked away with the victory in Open Girls.  Reigning East Coast Champion Austin Piper clinched her second win of the season in the Open Womens while Jazmine Dean doubled up sealing wins in the Explorer Womens and Womens Longboard divisions. And it was Mr. Energizer Charlie Hajak that took yet another win in the Super Seniors.
