NSSA - National Scholastic Surfing Association

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and assist its members in their interest to learn and develop the fundamentals and skills of surfing competition while competing in structured and quality events. The NSSA promotes the qualities of discipline and competitive excellence while supporting the merits of academic achievement to young surfers. The NSSA strives to provide a fun surfing experience for all of its members.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Since 1978, the NSSA program philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. More than 80 NSSA events are run nationwide that culminate with the annual National Championships which is regarded as the highest profile youth surfing event in America.

HUNTINGTON BEACH PIER SOUTHSIDE

AUGUST 25-26, 2012

CONDITIONS: 2-3 feet, shifty sandbar peaks

 

(Huntington Beach, Ca – August 28, 2012) --  The 2012-13 NSSA Southwest Conference got underway with the doubleheader Explorer events number one and two on August 25-26 on the southside of Huntington Beach Pier. Surf conditions remained consistent the entire weekend with contestable 2-3 foot peaks and reforms with classic California mid-summer conditions prevailing.  

 

JUNIORS FINALISTS-EVENT NUMBER ONE

Highlights from the Explorer opening weekend:

--Local HB surfers ripped their way to the top of the podium in the Juniors division. Bryce Marino took his first NSSA victory in the highly competitive Explorer Juniors division in event #1 and Dylan Aragon triumphed in event #2.

--Taylor Mathiesen and Dylan Sonderegger split the wins in the Mens division finals. Mathiesen took event #1 and Sonderegger claimed his first NSSA victory in event #2.

--Jake Marshall posted the high scoring wave of the weekend in the event #1 Boys preliminaries. Jake crushed a wave earning a near perfect 9.5 score. He went on to win the Boys final.

--Kade Matson dominated the Super Grom 10 & under division claiming double wins in both events.

--Malia Osterkamp put forth an outstanding performance on opening weekend taking three wins. She took first place in both events in the Womens and clinched the victory in the Girls division in event #2.

--Fresh off his National Mini Grom victory, Nick Marshall moved up into the Menehuene 12 & under division and took a 2nd place behind winner Tyler Gunter in event #1. The following day, he was on fire taking the win in the Menehuenes and then scoring a very impressive 2nd place behind winner John Mel in the stacked Boys final.

--The sport of kneeboarding returned to NSSA competition on Explorer opening day and was a big success. Sean Noone took the victory in what turned out to be a great contest homecoming for this division.

--Masters competition saw some new faces in the winners circle. Ed Custodio took the victory in event #1 and Eric Sorensen topped the field in event #2. Reigning National Masters and Seniors Champion Rick Takahashi was runner up in both finals. “Tak” took the Seniors in event #1 while Sorensen was red-hot on day two taking the double wins in Masters and Seniors.

--Coming off a commanding two title triumph in the 2012 Nationals, Rick “Rockin Fig” Fignetti picked up where he left off going undefeated in the Super Seniors and Duke divisions in both events #1 and #2. Fig racked up four wins cementing his status as the “man to beat” in both divisions this season!

--Malia Osterkamp and Nick Marshall were named NSSA Surfers of the Week for their standout performances over the weekend.

COMING UP IN CALI: Gold Coast Conference opening weekend is set for September 1-2 at C Street in Ventura. A potent south swell brewing in the South Pacific is on target to bring solid overhead surf for both days of the competition. The Southwest Open Season will kick off the following weekend on September 8-9 bringing the top competitive surfers on the west coast to Huntington Beach Pier.
